The Heritage Commission expresses deep concern over the future of Church of the Transfiguration in Maspeth, New York. This architecturally and historically significant building, designed by renowned Lithuanian émigré architect Jonas Mulokas, now faces the threat of closure and demolition. Alarmed by the situation, the international organization DOCOMOMO – dedicated to the documentation and conservation of modern architecture – has also addressed the Heritage Commission regarding this matter.
“This only reaffirms the church’s exceptional value. It is important not only to Lithuania and the Lithuanian-American community, but has also previously been recognized by Americans – and now by the international community as well. This situation highlights the pressing need for political and institutional commitment to the preservation of Lithuanian diaspora heritage abroad,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vaidutė Ščiglienė, Chair of the Heritage Commission.
