An international forum „Curonian Spit for us and for the world“ occurred on June 13–14, 2019 in Neringa (Curonian Spit). During the conference, it was commonly agreed that Curonian Spit needs a special law to harmonize its management and to guarantee its protection and sustainable development. The National Commission for Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Lithuania, the Directorate of the Curonian Spit National Park and Neringa municipality submitted a resolution to the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania and asked to initiate a preparation of the special law dedicated for the Curonian Spit.

Representatives of foreign countries, representatives of state and municipal institutions, non-governmental associations which are active in the field of cultural heritage, experts, local communities and investors participated in the International Forum.

An international conference had special guests from Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Russia. Representatives gave speeches about their UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The territory of Curonian Spit is divided between the Curonian Spit National Park inLithuania and the Kurshskaya Kosa National Park of the Russian Federation. The Curonian Spit was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2000 as an outstanding example of a landscape of sand dunes that is under constant threat from naturalforces (wind, tide, climate change) and human activity (the development of tourism).Compatibility of the objectives of the protected area, the international resort and thelocal community is one of the greatest challenge in safeguarding the preservation of Curonian Spit values and creating future plans.
