The commemoration of the heroic flight of the aviators who flew from the USA to Lithuania began immediately after the tragic end of their journey. However, the competition for the monument in Kaunas took longer than expected and was not completed before the Lithuanian occupation. Meanwhile, Lithuanians in America succeeded in creating several monuments to honor the Atlantic conquerors who embarked on their fateful journey from New York to Kaunas on July 15, 1933.
An integral part of the Lithuanian-themed Market (Marquette) Park district is the monument dedicated to the famous “Lituanica” pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas.
